Solar PV - Solar PV Installation - Micro Generation Certification

Before commissioning a Solar PV installer it is important to check that the company is registered under the Micro Generation Certification Scheme (MCS)

Solar PV Installation - Micro Generation Certification Scheme

The Micro Generation Certification Scheme is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme that demonstrates to customers that a Solar PV installation company is committed to meeting demanding and rigorously tested standards. The scheme was developed considering input from Solar PV Installers and product stakeholders. Similar to the Gas Safe Register, the Micro Generation Certification Scheme exhibits a mark of competency and demonstrates to customers that the installer's workmanship is of the highest quality every time.

Solar PV Installation - Installer's Work

A fully trained and accredited installer will be able to give advice as well as design and install Solar PV systems.

Solar PV InstallerThe Scope of Work Carried Out by a Solar PV Installer includes:

  • Advising on Solar PV systems
  • Design and Specification of Solar PV systems
  • Grid connected systems and off-grid systems
  • Electrical wiring of systems and associated components
  • Inverters
  • Batteries
  • Sizing Solar PV systems
  • Mounting structures for arrays
  • Installation of Solar PV systems
  • System Testing and commissioning
  • Maintenance of Solar PV systems
  • Advising on government grants and funding bodies

Solar PV Installation - Accreditation

The Micro Generation Certification Scheme accreditation ensures that contractors will have the capability and capacity to undertake the supply, design and installation, set to work, commissioning and handover of Solar PV Micro Generation Systems and that the installer operates a satisfactory quality management system. It also ensures that the mechanical elements are properly specified and installed and that weather tightness is maintained, with wind loads and static loads properly accommodated.

Solar PV Installation - Certification of Products

The Micro Generation Certification Scheme also demonstrates the quality and reliability of approved products by satisfying demanding and rigorously tested standards. Product certification involves the testing of products and an assessment of the manufacturing process, materials used, procedures and staff training.

Solar PV Installation - Code for Sustainable Homes

The Code for Sustainable Homes is a mandatory requirement for all newly built homes to meet sustainable ratings, including ratings for energy and CO² emissions. Technologies approved under the Micro Generation Certification Scheme can be said to meet the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Solar PV installerSolar PV Installation - Solar Power Tariffs

The Micro Generation Certification Scheme is being used by the Government as a yardstick for which micro generation installations should be eligible for financial incentives under the UK government's Clean Energy Cashback scheme.

The solar power tariffs available and the process for receiving them vary, depending on when the technology was installed, and whether the system and installer were registered under the Micro Generation Certification Scheme.

Solar PV Installation - Feed in Tariffs Scheme

The feed in tariffs scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated by the system, as well as a separate payment for the electricity exported to the grid. These payments are in addition to the bill savings made by using the electricity generated on-site. Once a micro generation technology is installed there should be a monthly reduction in the electricity bill and then an income from the feed in tariffs provider. Feed in tariffs are formulated so that the average monthly income from the installation will be significantly greater than the monthly loan repayment (with a 25 year loan).

Before an investment is made in renewable energy or low carbon energy systems the building owner should make sure the building is as energy efficient as possible, so that the Solar PV energy generated is not wasted. The building owner should ensure that the building has adequate loft and cavity wall insulation, efficient central heating controls, all old light bulbs have been replaced with low energy lighting and energy saving domestic appliances have been installed
